The Roseworth Primary School 0-3 Playgroup
For many years now Roseworth Primary School has offered a supported playgroup for parents of young children associated with our school. The playgroup is an integral part of our school’s connection with the community. The playgroup is facilitated by trained early childhood educators and aims to develop a strong relationship with the families of the young children who will attend our school.
The playgroup is provided at no cost to families and is operates on the basis of parents staying with their children during all playgroup sessions. During each playgroup session, our playgroup coordinators create opportunities for relationships to be enhanced between parents and their children, and parents with other parents. We are also in a position to provide advice and information on parenting issues and community support, with additional support offered by professionals, such as an early childhood nurse, or speech pathologist. Our coordinator can also demonstrates some key techniques based around play, communication skills and behaviour management.
There are many well documented benefits from attending playgroups. When children play they develop language, relationships, use their imagination, explore, experiment, learn, practice new skills and express ideas and emotions. Play is essential for children to reach their potential. It needs space, time and involves taking some risks. It allows children to make sense of their world. When they play, children get satisfaction from doing things their own way, use their own ideas and make their own decisions. Research into early brain development shows that playgroup aged children are at a stage of rapid brain development. At birth, the brain contains about 100 billion brain cells. By age three, close to one thousand trillion connections have been formed. Connections used repeatedly during the early years become the foundation for the brain’s function. All children have their different learning preferences. It might be through words, music or using their bodies. It could be from being alone, in a group, playing with numbers or through nature or pictures.
The Early Years Learning Framework * Access the EYLF from this link.
The Roseworth Playgroup embraces the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) which draws on conclusive international evidence that early childhood is a vital period in children’s learning and development. The EYLF forms the foundation for ensuring that children in all early childhood education and care settings experience quality teaching and learning. It has a specific emphasis on play-based learning and recognises the importance of communication and language (including early literacy and numeracy) and social and emotional development.
Our playgroup uses as its basis the EYLF concepts of belonging, being and becoming and as such provides play based learning opportunities allowing children to make sense of their world. Roseworth Primary School (and our playgroup) acknowledge that before birth children are connected and belong to family, community, culture and place. By engaging in play experiences and sharing these experiences with others children demonstrate a sense of being in the moment. Children’s knowledge, understandings and capacities change during the early years of childhood; children become active learners and contributors to society. Roseworth playgroup acknowledges EYLF by providing children with opportunities to maximise their potential and develop success in their future learning. The playgroup acknowledges that children have a strong sense of identity, contribute to their world, have a sense of wellbeing, are involved and confident learners and are effective communicators.
Our playgroup fosters different ways of learning which are often described as the multiple intelligences. The multiple intelligences are:
