The Smith Family
Roseworth Primary School has developed a partnership with the Smith Family which embraces the Smith Family as an integral agency of the Roseworth Primary School Community. The Smith Family is a national, independent children's charity helping disadvantaged Australians to get the most out of their education, so they can create better futures for themselves. The Smith Family believes that education is the key to changing lives. As research has shown, supporting a child's education is one of the most effective ways of breaking the cycle of disadvantage and ensuring they can access the same learning opportunities as their non-disadvantaged peers.
At the centre of The Smith Family's work, and the heart of the organisation, is a belief in the power and possibilities of relationships. For disadvantaged children to thrive, many of whom are growing up in lone parent and jobless households, they need to be connected to, and supported by, an extended family. It is this relationship that makes the partnership with the Smith Family so successful within our school. The major form of support comes through the The Smith Family's Learning for Life program which supports disadvantaged children and young people all the way through their education, from pre-school and primary school, to senior school and on to tertiary studies if they choose. This holistic, long term support gives young Australians the assistance they need to develop vital life skills, stay engaged in their education and have the best chance to realise their potential. Roseworth Primary School has almost 30% of the school community supported though these scholarships.
The school is very fortunate to have the expertise of Susan Hampton-Mortlock in the role of 'Learning for Life' Officer responsible for our school. In this way, our school families have the opportunity to work with the Smith Family and the school in a supportive and strategic way.
The Smith Family and the school agreed that to support the needs of the school community, a memorandum of understanding would be developed to guide the partnership.

The Smith Family has also been appointed as the lead agency to coordinate programs and services for the Roseworth Child and Parent Centre which is now fully operational having officially opened in 2014.
The Child and Parent Centre offers parenting workshops, child and maternal health services, playgroups, early learning programs, counselling and family support, depending on the specific needs of each community.
As a lead partner with Roseworth Primary School, The Smith Family has ongoing representation on the School Board of our school and as such is a welcomed and valued contributor to the operations of the school.
