Recess and Lunchtime Breaks
The recess siren at Roseworth Primary School is sounded at 10.48am and our students have a break from classroom activities for 20 minutes. The canteen opens for this period of time and serves students who wish to purchase morning snacks. All food is eaten in a supervised area near the undercover area before students go off to play. In this way we do not have students wandering around eating food.
The recess play period allows students to socialise with their friends and learn to play games. All classrooms are provided with kits of sporting equipment and students are encouraged to use this equipment, play on our fixed playground equipment or play other games to expend some energy and develop their fitness and friendships.
The school is divided into a number of play areas and these are duty areas for teachers and education assistants so that we can provide a high level of adult supervision during each recess period. Teachers on playground duty wear yellow high visibility vests and ensure that students play safely and sensibly. Students are encouraged to let the duty teacher know if their recess break is being interrupted by the poor behaviour of any student.
Recess concludes with short warning siren and then a longer siren to let them know that they should be getting ready to return to class. This is the time to have a drink, wash hands or use the toilets. On Monday, Wednesday and Fridays all students from years 1-6 go to the under cover area when the siren sounds for a short information sharing assembly before returning to their classroom or specialist teachers.
The lunchtime siren sounds at 12:44 pm and all students are supervised while they eat their lunch. Students are released from supervision at 1:00 pm and have 25 minutes to play in the school grounds. Supervised games are offered on the oval or in the junior primary play area and the library is open for students to play games or use library resources.
Once again duty teachers are supervising students and students who are not behaving appropriately may be given an “orange card” which removes them from the playground for a specified period of time depending on their record or inappropriate behaviour in the playground.
All staff of Roseworth Primary School are committed to ensuring that every child has the opportunity to enjoy their recess and lunchtime breaks and we work hard to provide an environment which supports and promotes purposeful play.
When the weather is not suitable for students to be outside, the school implements a wet weather policy. During periods of rain, students return to their rooms and play inside games. Lunch and recess periods are sometimes interrupted by rain and if the weather is too poor, our policy is for staff provide alternative areas for students to eat and play so that they do not get wet.
* Kindergarten and Pre-primary students remain in their own play areas in our early childhood playground.
